This item is in our new "False First" catalog, intending to identify and discuss problems in edition identification, which, frankly, seem widespread in the online market palce. This Carr is being listed as both False First and fiction because of unusual Number Code status. To begin, the classic definition of "First Edition" as used by serious dealers and collectors is, and has been for 70 years, the 1st trade edition prior to any change, later printing of the 1st, point of issue whatever to book or jacket. This seems to be missed by many online sellers...IE that a book CALLS itself first edition is of no value, around 30% of the book clubs and reprints and lesser and later printings out there call themselves 1st editions, in many case having been executed from the 1sts plates without correction of the data on copyright page. Random House is currently using a coherent system of identification and should be applauded, it is a system unique to RH. IE true 1st, for RH, assuminig no points, says First Edition and gives numbers 2 thru 9, 2nd printing removes the First statement and shows 2 thru 9 only. THIS ONE, The Alienist, with no 1st edition statement, has a 1 thru 10 w centered B, a 10th printing. Harper Collins, by contrast, uses stated First Edition with 1 thru 10 code for the actual 1st, but leaves the FE statement on while pulling the numbers to indicate later printings of the "First" of course, they can print anything they like, however the First was the one with the one in the line. Ahearn and Mcbride write with great clarity about all of this. Some other publishers are omitting the "First Edition" statement altogether and using ONLY the number code, and of course many other systems are still in play.
