1 Willis, Nathaniel The Youth's Companion, 1846, 1847
Boston N. Willis 1846 1st Edition Hardcover Fair- No Jacket Book
This is a bound volume of newsprint publications of TYC from January 7, 1846 through December 23rd, 1847. ''From the masthead, "a family paper devoted to piety, morality, brotherly love- no sectarianism, no controversy''. The newsprint surely shows its age, the first end sheets have an ugly dark stain followed by the few papers of actual text that have large corrected dog ears and short tears. The balance of the text while splotchily foxed in places has handsome illustrated content and is fully legible. It does have the notable waviness I associate with the rebinding of newspapers from this era. The book measures 16 3/8 X 11 5/8 and is 3/4 leather with spine and tips done and the balance done in paper. The paper at the board edges is quite worn through, as are the leather tips. The interior hinging is imperfect but holding, The spine has chipping out at head and foot and is starting at its creases. A pencil note appears on the first end sheet.

2 Willis, Nathaniel The Youth's Companion, 1848-49
Boston N. Willis 1st Edition Hardcover Fair None Book
The Youth's Companion was a young persons newspaper ''devoted to piety, morality, brotherly love-no sectarianism, no controversy''. This is a rebound group of newsprint TYC's from January 6, 1848, through February 21, 1850. The book measures 16'' X 11 1/4''. It is, according to the note appearing on the first masthead bound in sheep at spine and tips, the balance being marble paper boards. The hinging of the book, in sheep is cracking at spines top and bottom. The spine has notable chipping at top and bottom and tips have severe abrasion. The front papered hard cover also has severe abrasion, and it and the back cover are worn through at their edges. The pastedowns and end sheets have large moisture stained areas which seem not have affected the body of the text significantly. The text though rippled, has gorgeous illustrations, all legible, not badly foxed, though aged darkened. There is some weakeniing at the interior gutters/hinges but they are holding. There is an occasional overcutting of the leaves at their top corner.
